Tissue
Culture Research Program:
Plant
propagation methods and measures are considered as one of the most important
technologies that contribute to the promotion of agricultural production.
Modern propagation methods are simple to apply, highly productive, time
saving and cost-effective. Tissue culture is one of such recently developed
methods that can be utilized for propagation in a number of crops such
as banana, date palms and potatoes, among others. It also one of the
methods that can be used to produce disease-free plants, especially
virus-free ones. Further, tissue culture forms a step towards biotechnology
and genetic engineering that can be employed to produce plant varieties
with specific required traits. This Program has objectives of improving
the productivity of cassava, producing potato seeds, improving wheat
production and producing disease-free seedlings of mangoes and citrus
fruits.
