Abstract

Two experiments were conducted during the summer of 2000 and winter of 2000/2001, at the National Institute for the Promotion of Horticultural Exports (NIPHE) research farm, Wad Medani, Sudan. The objective was to study the effects of chicken manure, N and P fertilizers on muskmelon growth, soil and plant nutrient contents. The treatments were four levels of chicken manure (0, 4.5, 9 and 18 t/ha), two levels of N (0 and 55 kg N/ha) and two levels of P (0 and 55 kg P2O5 t/ha) arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that muskmelon vegetative growth, total soil N, available P and plant uptake of N and P were significantly increased with the application of chicken manure in combination with N and P. The highest values of these parameters were obtained with the application of 18 tons of manure/ha in combination with 55 kg N and 55 kg P2O5/ha.
