Field evaluation of Cavendish banana (Musa AAA) cultivars and clones

Salah Babiker Bakhiet and Mohamed Ahmed Ali

Abstract

This investigation was carried out to evaluate 18 selected mutant clones of the banana cultivar Williams in comparison to three standard banana cultivars (i.e. Williams, Dwarf Cavendish, Grand Nain) and a local banana selection under Kassala conditions. There was no significant difference between clones and cultivars in the number of days to shooting of the plant crop. Mutant clones 144 and 196 as well as Grand Nain gave significantly higher bunch weight, more number of hands per bunch and greater total yield compared to the standard cultivars Dwarf Cavendish and Williams. The fruit length of clones 144 and 196 significantly exceeded that of Dwarf Cavendish , but were similar to Williams and Grand Nain cultivars.
