Hamid: A short duration cotton cultivar for integrated crop management

Ahmed M. Mustafa and E. A. Babiker

Abstract:

Hamid, an early maturing medium staple cotton with wider genetic base for resistance to bacterial blight, was recently released for commercial cotton production. The average lint yield advantage over Barac (67) B and Nour was 20% and 12% respectively, with yarn strength similar to Barac (67) B. It gave 69% of its yield in the first pick compared to 56 for Barac (67) B and 54 for Nour. Hence, Hamid emerged as an early maturing cultivar with less vulnerability to pests; and can therefore, best be fitted into both the short season production system and the integrated crop management strategy.
