| Effect of
salt concentration on flocculation-deflocculation in some selected soils Eltijani A. Elias Abstract: Soil suspensions were equilibrated with solutions of Na/Ca differing in total cationic charge and Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR) to determine the precise condition under which clay disperses. Twenty five solutions of different concentrations of Na and Ca and differing in SAR were used. Flocculation was assessed on the basis of absorbance. Exchangable Sodium Percentage (ESP) and SAR were found to be closely correlated in all soils. The experimental ESP/SAR ratio was comparable to the predicted values but differed among soils. These differences could be explained by variations in charge density of the clay.
