degradation of different parts of Mesquite (Prosopis chilensis) in the rumen
of Nubian goats in the Sudan Gezira Mohmed Elamin Elimam and Manal Ali Ahmed Babikirl Abstract: The composition and degradation, of the different parts of Mesquite (Prosopis chilensis L.) in the rumen of the Nubian goats were determined. The composition (g/kg) of DM, CP, EE, CF, ash and NFE, respectively was 360,245,15,225,80 and 435 for leaves; 942.3, 175, 15, 190,40 and 460 for semi-mature pods (podsI); 924.3, 140, 45,310,50 and 575 for mature pods (Pods II); 707.6,210, 60,415,60 and 25.5 for leaves and semi-mature pods. Mean rumen degradation (%) at 48 hours incubation for OM, CP and OM, respectively were 33.55, 38,43, 30.71 for leaves, 41.74,65.26,41.0 for Podsl, 44.35, 25.75,43.71 for Podsll and 40.81, 59.0, 40.75 for leaves and PodsI. Degradation characteristics were calculated and a lag time was required for the degradation of leaves and PodsI due to their low NFE, higher CF and probably antinutritional factors. Different parts of Mesquite are valuable protein supplements and efforts are required to improve the palatability of the leaves.
