Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization of Lehmann lovegrass on some range soils from Southern Arizona

Abstract:
 

Lehmann lovegrass, Eragostis Lehmanna Nees, one of the important range grasses in Arizona, was grown in the greenhouse on the surface soil (0-45 cm) of five different soil series, representing four soil orders, and fertilized with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and the uptake of a number of nutrients was determined. For the lehmann lovergrass grown on the Mollisols , Alfisols and Aridisols there was no significant difference (0.05 level) between the N content of  the grass grown on the N treatment (100 109/kg) soil and the control, but its content in the N+P treatments (100mg N+ 100 mg P) / kg soil in two soils (Mollisols and Alfisols) were lower than in the other two treatment, probably due to the dilution effect of the vigorus vegetative growth. The phosphorus contents were significantly higher in the N+P treatments while there were no significant differences between the magnesium (Mg) contents. Soil samples from two soil series before and after planting were taken from treatment N+P and analyzed for the contents of N ,P, zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se). N and P contents. in both soils before and after planting were more or  less the same while other elements decreased after planting. This indicates that the addition of N+P helped maintaining their levels in the soil.
