Gamaleldin A . Hamid, O.A . Sidahmed, and A . A . Genief

Abstract:

Two local and seven introduced sweet orange cultivars on sour orange rootstock were subjected to a compartive study for several years in central Sudan. The results revealed that, the introduced cultivars, were more vigrous in vegetative growth and had greater fruiting capacity than the local ones. The introduced cultivars "Butler" and " Hamlin" were the most productive, followed by" Campbell" and" Olinda" respectively. " Jaffa" and" Sinnari" (Local) were the least productive. The cultivars "Local Selection" and " Frost" were leading in fruit quality whereas" Jaffa" was trailing. Based on productivity and quality attributes, the cultivars "Buttler" , "Hamlin" , Campbell", "Olinda", "Frost" and" local Selection" seem to be the most suitable for the heavy clay conditions of central Sudan.
