Abstract:

A spreadsheet program with Visual Basic Applications was used to simulate the operation of Roseires and Sennar dams on the Blue Nile, Sudan. The simulation considers the heightening of Roseires dam by 10 meters. It is designed as a decision-support system to plan the plantation areas of major irrigation schemes that draw water from the two reservoirs. The program was designed to test any proposed cropping pattern for the planned agricultural projects Kenana and Rahad phase II. All-year planning was tested using different inflow reliability with the maximum profitable proposed cropping patterns of Kenana and Rahad phase II and different intensification scenarios for the Gezira scheme. Results showed that the irrigation bottleneck would shift towards the beginning of the flood season (May-June) instead of the dry season (December-March) before the heightening. Severe water shortage could occur depending on the total area assigned to winter crops in the Gezira Scheme. The program lends a flexible and quick tool in the decision-support-process of allocation of the agricultural areas to various crops in the major irrigated agricultural projects of the Blue Nile.
