Pastoral and livestock development projects in Sudan

Ahmed S. EI Wakeel

Abstract:

Sudan ranks second to Ethiopia in Africa in livestock population. It has the largest extent of permanent pasture and the largest number of pastoralists than any African country. However, it falls short of its potential in livestock production. Pastoral and livestock projects have probably the worst failure rate of all development projects in Africa and Sudan is no exception. There are no easy solutions, no remarkable success stories to be told about these projects in Sudan, but there could be promising beginnings if reasons for failure are avoided and sound interventions are taken into account. This paper highlights the situation of pastoralists, the reasons for development projects' failure and provides some clues and suggestions to solutions.
