Interactions between the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica and its host Sorghum bicolor at a molecular level

Yukihiro Hiraoka and Yukihiro Sugimoto

Abstract:

Using the suppression subtractive hybridization strategy, 84 genes were isolated from roots of sorghum cv. Abu 70 a susceptible host, in response to Striga hermonthica infection. Several genes were homologous to genes associated with biotic or abiotic stress responses. Other genes showed high sequence homology to ESTs isolated from sorghum exposed to different stress conditions such as wound, oxidization, pathogen infection, heat shock, and acid or alkaline treatments. Accordingly, S. hermonthica infection appears to put Abu 70 under both biotic and abiotic stresses.
