Abstract:

Hydrological GIS based database is the fundamental data for building a distributed hydrological model. Coarse and relatively imprecise hydrological data, Hydro 1K, was previously used for that purpose. Recently, more accurate and precise DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data called SRTM has been provided. The update of hydrological database for the upper Nile with SRTM DEM is the main purpose here. The representative tool for building hydrological GIS database on ArcGIS is known as Arc Hydro and the output database is called Arc Hydro data model. This article introduces how to build or update such hydrological network for vast basins like the upper Nile with SRTM 90 m resolution DEM. The precision of DEM and stream channels derived from SRTM were also discussed.
