Genetic variation and gene action on resistance to spotted stem borer, Chilo parlellus (Swinhoe) in three sorghum crosses

A. M. Nour, 1 and A.E. Ali2

Abstract:

Inheritance pattern for resistance to the spotted stem borer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) in grain sorghum was investigated in a generation mean analysis of three crosses involving three resistant and two susceptible sorghum genotypes in a field experiment during the long rainy season of 1990. Significant differences were found among the six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1., and BC2) for foliar damage, deadheart, percent stem tunnelling and number of exit/entry holes. Resistance to these charcters was mainly additive. Non-additive gene action has no effects on determining resistance to the stem borer. These results suggest the use of a breeding program whereby accumulation of desirable alleles at a number of loci is allowed.
