Response of some sorghum hybrids and their parents to nitrogen fertiliztion

A.B. Mohamed1, A.M. Badreldin 2, N.D. Mohamed1

Abstract:

Four sorghum sorghum bicolor L. (Moench) hybrids and their parents were grown with three levels of N (0, 43, 86 kgN/ha) at the University of Gezira Research Farm, Wad Medani, Sudan. Nitrogen significantly influenced all characters studied (% protein in seedling and grain, grain yield, days to 50% flowering and stalk dry weight), except 100 seed weight. Positive heterosis were shown with yield and negative for days to 50% flowering and grain protein. The magnitude of heterosis was found to be highly manifested when nitrogen was applied, indicating the superiority of hybrids under high agricultural inputs. Grain yield showed significant positive correlation with seedling protein for parents and stalk dry weight for both hybrids and parents and it was positively correlated with 100 seed weight for hybrids only.
