Abstract:

As part of the on going search for new pesticides, the crude solvent extracts of roots and stem bark of Adenlum obesum (Forsk.), Apocynaceae, locally known as Megadery or Shagaret Elsim, were tested against Mus musculus. These plant parts were first chopped and milled to a fine powder and then subjected to extraction by three different solvents: dichloromethane (DCM), methanol (MeOH) and water. The LD50s within 24 hr (per os) were found to be 9.69 and 22.10 g plantlkg body weight, for DCM and water extracts of the roots, respectively. The symptoms of toxicity were found to be: hyperthermy, hyperventilation, collapse and atony leading to death. No acute mortality was recorded in the case of the MeOH-extract of the roots, nor for any of the three extracts of the bark.
