Towards understanding the behavior of small farmers facing additional risk of a cash oriented agricultural policy: The case of the dryland of Western Sudan

Eltighani M. Elamin1

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to undentand the behavior of dryland small farmen in western Sudan for policy objectives. A combined Mean-Gini and Focus-Loss risk programming was used to model the farming conditions of a drought prone Sheikan rural area. The study revealed the extreme farming risks faced by the small dryland farmen. It also indicated that their weak avenions towards risk stemmed largely from the magnitude of risk they are facing. The model suggests cropping patterns that are likely to reduce risks of both income and grain when backed up by a financial policy dependent on farmen' expectations for the rainy season.
