Profitability analysis of potato production in the Sudan

Abbas Elsir M. Elamin

Abstract:

This paper discusses the situation of potato production with respect to its financial and economic profitability as well as its international competitiveness in the use of domestic resources. Also, it analyses the government policies and their effect on potato production. Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) has been employed to measure the domestic resource cost ratio, international value added, nominal and effective protection coefficients. The results indicated that Khartoum State has a comparative advantage in potato production under current conditions of technology, prices and prevailing yield. In addition to Khartoum State, Nile River State is considered the most important area at present potentially suitable for potato production in the country. Results also indicated that future prospects for potato production are extremely good provided necessary efforts are exerted to promote commercial production for both local and export markets.
