Effects of Seed Rate and Method of Planting on the Growth and Yield of Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum - graecum) in the heavy clay soils of central Sudan

Ali El hag Khashmelmous

Abstract:

Local fenugreek seeds were sown at Sennar Research Station experimental field in the heavy clay central plain of Sudan during the seasons 1986/87 , 1987/88 and 1988/89. Three seeding methods , namely: in holes on ridges, drilled in lines on ridges or broadcasted on flat plots , were tested. Five seed rates were used comprising 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 and 12.5 kg/fed (5.95, 11.90, 17.85 , 23.80 and 29.75 kg/ha). Treatments were entered in a split plot design with four replications. Growth and production varied with season due to thrips damage. A positive relation occurred between yield and seed rate where the increase of seed rate resulted in a significant (P=0.05) increase in seed yield. The reverse was true for the number of branches and pods per plant. A wide variation was 1 recorded in yield from 294.0 to 842. during 1986/87, 126.7 to 390.5 in 1987/88 and 367.2 to 936.3 kg/ha in 1988/89. Planting in flat plots resulted in significant (P=0.05)  increases in branching and processes but  relatively fewer plants and decreased seed yield.
