Evaluation of pollination ability and metaxenic effects of date palm males,on two female cultivars, Mishrig Wad Laggai and Mishrig Wad Khatiab at New Halfa Area

Abstract:

The main objective of this study was to select highly potent male date palm to raise the standard of male varieties in the Sudan. Two experiments were carried out at New Halfa during 1993 through 1999 to evaluate sixty three male date palms for pollination efficiency on Mishrig Wad Laggai (MWL) and Mishrig Wad Khatiab (MWK) palms cultivars. Nine males had profound effects on fruit characters, maturity period and yield when used as pollinators of MWL&MWK. These males were New Halfa Male 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 at Horticultural Research Station. Significant differences were observed in all studied parameters including spathe characters, Duration of flowering, Pollen grain characters, Fruit set %, Maturity period, Fruit quality, and yield of MWL & MWK cultivars. New Halfa male No. 3 and 6 were identified as high compatible pollinators for Mishrig Wad Laggai and Mishrig Wad Khatiab date palm cultivars.
