Southern
Sudan Research Program:
Southern
Sudan is one of the most resource-endowed parts of the country. It has
rainfall reaching about 1500 mm in the south-most part. It is suitable
for growing most tropical crops such as sugar cane, rice, cassava, tea,
coffee, pineapple, as well as a wide range of fruits. It is famous for
its rich forest resources and other plant and animal diversity. Nonetheless
the civil unrest that prevailed in this part of the country since independence
prevented the development of Southern Sudan despite the huge natural resources
available. This program is intended to be in place once a peace settlement
is reached. It gives priority to commodities in which Southern Sudan has
a comparative advantage.
