Socioeconomic
Research Program:
Relative
to the other old disciplines in ARTC, socioeconomic research has been
a recent activity, introduced in the early 1970s. It has continued
to acquire increasing importance and its role has further increased
within the changes brought about through the new paradigm of market
liberalization and its effect on production, finance and marketing strategies
and policies. Economic viability considerations and beneficiaries convictions
are becoming important yardsticks for defining research themes and priorities
to generate improved technologies that stand good chances for adoption.
The Socioeconomic program continues to play its role in the delineation
and transfer of such technologies, monitoring of their variability and
their rates of adoption by users and estimating their economic and social
impacts. It is also engaged in the analysis of agricultural policies
and their effects on production as well as analyses related to the competitiveness
and comparative advantages of agricultural enterprises.
