Range
and Pasture Research Program:
Sudan’s
animal wealth, estimated at 130 million heads, depends mainly on natural
rangelands and crop residues, and to a very limited extent on green
fodders and concentrates. Rangelands play an important role in the
conservation of soil and plant and animal genetic resources. They are,
however, faced with many problems such as overgrazing, expansion of
agriculture in pastoral lands, seasonal fires, felling of trees, etc.
These have led to serious degradation of most Sudanese rangelands. This
program has goals of availing feed for the national herd, conserving
natural and genetic resources, developing the livestock sector, promoting
export earnings and improving living standards of livestock producers.
