Crop Protection Research Program:

High crop losses are encountered due to the attack of different pests and diseases.  Indicators to such crop losses are illustrated by:

1.  Cotton attack by the American bollworm results in shedding of fruits that may reach up to 65%.

2.   Jassids can lead to cotton yield losses of 2.25 kantars/fed.

3.   The whitefly may reduce cotton yield by 96%. Additionally it secretes honey that results in lint stickiness. This has prevented mechanical cotton harvesting that was introduced early in Rahad Scheme.

4.   Tomato infestation with ‘Halook’ led to the termination of its production on fertile soils at the banks of the Blue Nile.

This Program aims at pest control through adoption of the most efficient means and accordingly attain higher productivity and better quality of various crops. The Program is divided into four Sub-programs covering research on insect pests, plant diseases, weeds and pesticides residues, that thrive to produce suitable and economically viable technologies to control pests under sustainable environment.
