Effect of Pruning on Yield and Fruit Quality of Mishrig Wad Laggai
Date Palm under Khartoum Conditions
Dawoud H. Dawoud and Fatima A. Ahmed
Abstract:
This experiment was conducted at Al Halfai private Date palm Orchard in
1999, 2000 and 2001 on 45 Mishrig Wad Laggai (MWL) date palm selected in
RCBD and subjected to five pruning treatments concerning the leaf/bunch
ratio, while 10 bunches were left on each experimental tree. The tested
treatments were: Control – no pruning (A), 12 leaves/bunch (B), 10
leaves/bunch (C), 8 leaves/bunch (D) and 6 leaves/bunch (E). The control
and severe pruning treatments resulted in clear reduction in the
yield/tree, while moderate pruning (C and D) gave the highest
yield/tree. Fruits of moderate pruning (C) were leading in weight, and
volume indices. Fruits of C and D treatments revealed significant
increments in fruit moisture percentage, as compared with the control.
The fruits total sugars and sucrose contents were higher with the light
(B) and Moderate (C) pruning treatments than with other treatments and
control. The percentage of reducing sugars was gradually decreased as
pruning severity increased. The results support the recommend moderate
pruning 10 leaves/bunch of MWL date palms under Khartoum conditions and
other regions with similar conditions.
