Effect of Fruit Thinning on Date Yield and Quality of Mishrig Wad Khateeb and Barakawi in Northern Sudan

Marium A. Elhassasn and Fatima A. Ahmed

Abstract

The experiments were conducted in the Horticulture nursery and a farmer orchard at Elgurerir for two and three seasons on Mishrig wad Khateeb (MWK) and Barakawi palms, respectively, to determine the effect of fruit thinning on fruit quality and yield of both cultivars. The results showed that the best method of thinning for MWK was the removal of the central strands and for Barakawi was the removal of tip and central strands. Fruits resulting from thinned bunches were significantly superior in size, weight, pulp/seed ratio, total soluble solid (TSS) and yield compared to those collected from unthinned bunches.
