Millet
Research Program:
Millet
is the main food for most people of Kordofan and Darfur, where it is
grown in the sandy soils in the northern parts of these states. In
these areas rainfall is around 400 mm per annum, which is too little
to sustain the production of other cereals. This allows millet to be
the best alternative cereal to be grown in these areas. Average millet
acreage is around 5.4 million feddans, producing some 300,000 tons with
low average yields of about 90 kg/fed. This program targets the following:
(1) Breeding varieties that are tolerant to water stress and resistant
to powdery mildew disease and millet head worm – Naffasha – (Heliocheilus
albidennis).
(2) Improving agricultural practices
to increase production and better utilize available resources.
The
expected outcome is production of millet to enhance food security in
these areas where other cereal crops cannot be successfully grown.
