Maize Research Program:

Maize is an important source of carbohydrates since the maize seed consists of 70% starch and 10% protein.  It is an essential component of human food and animal feed. It is also used as a source for extracting edible oil. Maize is a minor crop in Sudan, grown in many parts of the country in small areas. Productivity in research stations is around 2.0-2.5 tons/feddan for open-pollinated types; and in the range of 2.5-3.0 tons for hybrids. This is low compared to 3.0 tons/feddan achieved by farmers in Egypt. This program aims at breeding varieties and hybrids for high yield and adaptability to diversified production environments.
