Food
Legumes Research Program:
This
Program involves five winter legume crops, namely, faba bean, haricot
beans, chickpea, lentil and lupins all of which are mainly grown under
irrigation in northern Sudan. They have however been recently introduced
in Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar, White Nile and North and South Darfur States.
Average yields are 0.7, 0.6, 0.4 and 0.7 t/fed for faba bean, chickpea,
lentil and haricot beans, respectively. These yields are considered
low if compared with those realized in experimental stations in Sudan
(1.0-1.2 t/fed.) or with those obtained in other countries such as Egypt
(1.2 t/fed).The Program also includes research on three summer legume
crops: cowpea, pigeon pea and guar; all grown under rain-fed conditions
in western Sudan, Blue Nile, Gedarif, Kassala and Sennar States. The
Program endeavors to raise crop productivity, reduce production costs,
arrive at optimal crop rotations and provide breeder seed for further
propagation by concerned institutions.
