Gum
Arabic Research Program:
Gum
Arabic forms one of the most important Sudanese export commodities.
The Sudan is at the lead in both production and export of gum Arabic,
accounting for about 80% of the world exports of this commodity. Gum
Arabic is produced in the Sudan within the Gum Arabic belt that covers
about 20% of the country’s area where it forms a major source of income
to farmers in Kordofan, Darfur and eastern Sudan. Gum Arabic is produced
from Hashab (Acacia senegal) tree, although gums produced from
‘Talh’ (Acacia seyal), ‘Kakamut’ and ‘Tartar’ have started to
acquire importance in the international gums market. The most important
problems facing gum Arabic are yield variability and drought. Research
on gum Arabic aims to boost productivity and utilize Hashab in agro-forestry
systems that contribute to environmental sustainability, desertification
control and increased production of other types of gums.
