Groundnut Research Program:

A groundnut is one of the most important oil crops in both the irrigated agricultural schemes and traditional agriculture in western Sudan.  The cultivated area is around 2.7 million feddans, producing only 0.6 million tons indicating low productivity which is estimated at 0.9 t/fed. under irrigation, compared to 1.43 t/fed in each of Lebanon and Iraq, 1.0 t/fed. in Syria and 0.5 t/fed. in Algeria. Productivity under rain-fed conditions is only one third of that under irrigation. This Program has already produced varieties of high quality and has suggested technologies to increase production.  Some of those varieties have already been released. The program aims at applying available technologies to increase productivity and also to pursue research for improving quality to meet the demand of local as well as international markets.
