Plant
Genetic Resources Program:
The
Sudan hosts a wide diversity of plants reflected by traditional and
wild plant races of a myriad of important crops such as sorghum, sesame,
okra and cucurbits. It is even considered as the center of diversity
of these plants. Such diversity has become threatened by extinction
due to a number of factors, the most important being the replacement
of traditional varieties by improved ones, expansion in mechanized farming,
climatic changes and natural disasters of drought, desertification and
the like. There have been growing concerns in many countries, international
organizations and research institutions to harness the degeneration
in the natural wealth of biodiversity through provision of circumstances
conducive for its preservation and maintenance.
This program aims at the protection, identification and preservation
of Sudanese genetic diversity and facilitation of its use in genetic
improvement program for the production of improved crop varieties that
address the concerns of producers and consumers.
