Date Palms Research Program:

The date palm has historically acquired a special economic and social status, especially in northern Sudan.  It is well known for its multi-purpose benefits in terms of dates production, its direct and indirect positive impact on the environment, its decorative role in roads and gardens and its wide adaptation to different environments and expansion in different regions of the Sudan.  Although many countries have paid high attention to this blessed tree on account of its varied advantages, concern about its development in the Sudan, either with respect to production or research, has not been as required, resulting in decreasing productivity and production.  At the same time, a lot of trees were lost due to natural disasters, implying the need for their replacement as well as further expansion in areas under date palms. The research program on date palms and dates aims at developing technologies that assist in the development of date palms cultivation such as propagation of seedlings through tissue culture, training and providing extension services to the beneficiaries and people engaged in the dates sector, and expansion in date palms cultivation in all suitable habitats as well as for environmental benefits and along irrigation canals in irrigated areas.
