Cotton Research Program:

The area under cotton used to be in the range of one million feddan in the past, but has substantially declined in later seasons.  About 90% of the area is under irrigation. Most of the cotton produced (90%) is exported as raw material and accordingly forms an important foreign exchange earner.  It also supplies raw material for local industries such as weaving and spinning as well as the oil industry.  Sudan produces 4 types of cotton namely, extra-long, long, medium & short staples.  Productivity is around 0.5 tons/feddan, which is low compared to 0.8 tons achieved in Egypt. This program aims at producing cotton varieties that can meet the demand of international textile industry.  It also targets breeding for high yield, pests and disease resistance and efficient use of agricultural inputs.
